For many years Boost Mobile put on the Pro of Surf at Lower Trestles in San Clemente, CA. A multiple day contest that was one of many pitstops on the WSL World Tour. I had the opportunity to design the last Boost Mobile Pro before it became the Hurley Pro. The concept was largely based off of a custom typeface I made with a colorful gradient inlay. Supplemented with airbrush artwork by local San Clemente surf artist Gary Prettyman. It was a large and robust project with many moving parts. The visual aesthetic had to be bold enough to make a impact but flexible enough to work on every aspect of collateral that went into the event.
Boost Mobile needed to come up with concepts for their annual action sports team ad campaign. The request was for a series of double page magazine spreads featuring a different athlete and device per ad. With a preexisting library of images, I chose to do a split image composition with the photos treated in sequential tight and wide formats. Large headlines running over image, laid out in a stylistic way. Playing up the idea that your phone is an extension of your personal style as much as it is a powerful communication tool.
Several opportunities have presented themselves to concept and design Virgin Mobile store fixtures and displays. Because of the fast pace and highly competitive nature of the Prepaid retail landscape, brands were always looking for ways to stand out. Displays are a great way to market your brand in an unique and own-able way as well as highlight your product in a busy retail environment.
The opportunity came up to do apparel graphics for Southern California based lifestyle brand the Cycle Zombies. I came up with several designs for their fall line which were released globally. We also shot photos which helped me contribute to a larger brand story. The graphics and images ultimately translated to general print/digital marketing applications and more specifically t-shirts and headwear produced in several different color ways.
I had the opportunity to work with BLVD. Skateboards on a deck graphic series. For this design I incorporated oversized marquee letters, cropping off the deck as if their names were featured in lights. The high contrast black and white typography created a bold graphic and larger than life representation of each skaters name and brand callout.
The opportunity to work with Listen! Skateboards came to fruition. They were developing graphics for the following season and needed additional artwork. I designed a series of graphics inspired by vintage wood block carvings with the skater’s last name incorporated. Then went with a bold color palette to help modernize the look. Finally signing off with consistent branding on the tail for visual continuity.
